If you are the event coordinator for a diocese, church, Christian/Catholic school, Bible study, women's  group, or book club, Susan K. Rowland would be an exciting and practical addition to your calendar this year. Whether it's a dinner keynote, weekend retreat, religious education training, or high school assembly, Rowland offers practical tips, with a lot of humor, about living in today's culture and keeping our sanity and our spirituality intact. This page has a sampling of topics she can present, but any topic related to spirituality and culture, especially those covered in the book, Make Room for God, can be adapted for your needs.

Susan Rowland's background and qualifications:

Susan is especially qualified to speak to your catechists, youth groups, parishioners, and women's groups. A youth leader and catechist for 20 years, she has helped prepare hundreds of young people for Confirmation. She is also an alumna of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio's Lay Ministry Formation Program.

She has published articles and served as a guest columnist in several national magazines.

Some of her article topics are:

  • 'Faith Formation Opportunities' for teachers of the Faith (2010).
  • 'Making Time for God' (2010, reprinted in 2011).

Topics:

Youth / Youth Leader Workshop: “I Don’t Get It!” complained a 16-year-old after a National Catholic Youth Convention. Even young people deeply involved in parish and diocesan youth programs may not “get” what it’s all about: Relationship vs. “religion.” This speech/workshop cuts through the confusion and offers a viable answer to the question we all should ask: What is this all about?”

Catechist Workshop: “A Teaching Ministry without Clutter.” Butter, the horse, had one wild run through the streets of Scottsdale, Arizona, one Sunday afternoon (after being blessed at the Franciscan Renewal Center!). Who was the mysterious "horse whisperer" who stopped his flight? And what can both of them teach us about being catechists? A humorous and thought-provoking look at the highs and lows of religious education. This workshop will get your educators thinking about how they, too, can be “whisperers” to their learners. The central theme of this talk is Pope John Paul’s statement that “the definitive aim of catechesis is to put people in touch with Jesus.”

Adult Faith Formation Workshop for parish/ diocesan leaders: “The S.U.R.E. System for successful AFF programs.” Basic guidelines and considerations for planning adult programs, which combat the Catholic cultural assumption “I’m done when I'm confirmed.”  This workshop was inspired by, and is in the spirit of, the U.S. Bishops’ pastoral, “Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us.”

The 'Make Room for God' Retreat/Parish Mission:
Based on Susan Rowland's book, this weekend retreat or three-day parish mission covers the most important themes of the book, including:
~~Keeping God central in our lives and simplifying our relationship with God.
~~Balancing our work/family life with our spiritual concerns.
~~Practical and helpful hints for 'clearing out the clutter' in our environments.

Individual Speech Topics:

♥ God Without Clutter: Practicing for Eternity.
♥ The Sabbath: A Divine Awareness of Time.
♥ Christian First: Reflections of a Born-Again Catholic.
♥ True Freedom in God.
♥ Catholics and Divorce: Healing from the Big Hurt.
♥ Seasonal topics for the liturgical year, especially Advent and Lent.

♥ Living for God in a Hostile Culture.
♥ "I Should Be Doing Better." [Who says?]
♥ Clearing the Clutter: The Grief and the Glory.
♥ I Love a List: Being Productive for God.
♥ Kicking the Worry Habit.
♥ Forgiveness: The Basics.
♥ Waiting for God.

Please note that the above are only suggested topics.
I will work with you to coordinate a workshop, retreat or talk
especially for your group's needs.
